Chartered Schools: Evaluation Strategies

Jeffery Henig, professor of political science and education, has been researching Washington, D.C. chartered schools to help determine the ways in which they affect student achievement.

Jeffery Henig, professor of political science and education, has been researching Washington, D.C. chartered schools to help determine the ways in which they affect student achievement. His team's work was recently cited in an article outlining strategies for evaluating these schools. In efforts to disaggregate the data, they identified essentially "mission oriented" nonprofits and schools run by "market oriented" groups, then examined how the two differed in terms of school size and autonomy. Henig's research is considered particularly useful because it considers the different dimensions and measures of success, ranging from test scores to motivating students to be lifelong learners.

The article, entitled "Are Charter Laws Working?" appeared in the October 8 edition of the Education Week.
