Anna Neumann is New President of ASHE

Anna Neumann, Professor of Higher Education, has been installed as President of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE). As President, Neumann will lead association-wide efforts in research, publication, teaching improvement, development of graduate education, and faculty preparation throughout 2011-12.
Anna Neumann, Professor of Higher Education, has been installed as President of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE).  ASHE is the leading association in the U.S. for researchers who study higher education in its many forms:  teaching and learning, faculty careers and intellectual growth, curriculum, student development and campus life, organization and leadership, public policy, social and cultural environments.  As President, Neumann will lead association-wide efforts in research, publication, teaching improvement, development of graduate education, and faculty preparation throughout 2011-12.
 
ASHE has more than 2,000 individual members, representing nearly every state and some 16 countries worldwide. Members are from both four- and two-year colleges, and including faculty, students and administrators.
 
Neumann is the 2010 recipient of the AERA Division J Exemplary Research Award and was recently named a Fellow of the American Education Research Association for "exceptional scientific or scholarly contributions to education research or significant contributions to the field." She directs the the Program in Higher and Postsecondary Education at Teachers College.
 
Neumann's research and teaching interests include the pedagogies of liberal education, teaching and learning in urban colleges and universities serving first-generation learners, professors and their intellectual careers, qualitative research strategies and methods, and doctoral students' learning of research and development as researchers.  Her recently published book, Professing to Learn: Creating Tenured Lives and Careers in the American Research University (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2009), analyzes the scholarly learning and development of 78 early midcareer professors in diverse disciplines and fields and working at five major American research universities.
