TC's Knight Highlights College Application Challenges for Immigrants

Applying to college is especially tough for first generation immigrants, but the first step is to demystify the process, says TC's Michelle Knight, quoted in an article in Teaching Tolerance.

The application process in the United States is unfamiliar to many first-generation immigrant families, making it more difficult for them to map out a college-ready resume, fill out a college application or pursue much-needed financial aid. Michelle Knight, TC Associate Professor of Education, believes that overcoming fear of the process is the first step. InCollege-Ready: Preparing Black and Latina/o Youth for Higher Education, Knight and her co-author Joanne Marciano, provide insight into who and what influences college-going processes and engaging readers in critical analysis to create culturally relevant policies and practices within their own school contexts.
