Price-Dennis Honored for Article on Urban Fiction and Multicultural Literature

Detra Price-Dennis, Assistant Professor of Elementary & Inclusive Education, is the recipient of the 2014 Janet Emig Award for Exemplary Scholarship for her article, “Urban Fiction and Multicultural Literature as Transformative Tools for Preparing English Teachers for Diverse Classrooms,” co-authored with Marcelle Haddix, of Syracuse University, and published in the April 2013 issue of English Education.

English Education is the journal of the Conference on English Education (CEE), a constituent organization within the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). The Janet Emig Award, given in of Janet Emig, professor emeritus of English Education at Rutgers University, recognizes an exceptional scholarly article published in English Education within the previous calendar year.

Price-Dennis will be honored at the 2014 NCTE Annual Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, during the CEE Luncheon on November 21.

In their article, Price-Dennis and Haddix present two case studies of preparing middle- and secondary-level English educators from a diversities perspective.

“Both case studies presented have a particular interest in the critical theoretical and pedagogical insights developed by pre-service teachers through their discussions of children's and adolescent literature that deals with diverse, urban, and multicultural perspectives,” the authors write in their abstract. “In doing so, these case studies reposition urban fiction and multicultural literature as transformative tools for teacher education curriculum.”
