Who is Eligible?

The Federal legislation defines deaflindness as:

Having auditory and visual impairments, the combination of which creates such severe communication and other developmental and learning needs that they cannot be appropriately educated in special education programs solely for children and youth with hearing impairments, visual impairments and severe disabilities, without supplementary assistance to address their educational needs due to these dual concurrent disabilities.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Children and youth from birth to age 21.
  • Combination of vision and hearing impairments.
  • The term deafblind includes individuals displaying a range of sensory impairments, physical ability, and intellectual capacity.
  • All infants, children, and youth experiencing sensory impairments are eligible for services.

PLEASE NOTE: Individuals are eligible for services even if the impairments have not yet been confirmed through formal testing. Any child or youth who functions as if he or she were experiencing hearing and vision impairments is eligible.
