Master of Education



  The Master of Education Program develops breadth of 

  understanding of higher and postsecondary education, though

  emphasizing particular domains of study and practice, among

  them, academic learning and development, organizational and

  institutional processes, and social and comparative perspectives. 

  Students in the Ed.M. Program typically use these offerings to

  elaborate and deepen their experience-based knowledge and

  intellectual interests in policymaking, curriculum development,

  student development, etc.  Ed.M. students conclude their

  programs of study by writing an Integrative Paper focused on a

  particular topic of professional and personal interest and drawing

  on the knowledge resources availed by the three curricular

  domains.

 

 


The Ed.M. requires a minimum of 60 points and an integrative paper prepared as a culminating project.  The Ed.M. offers two tracks:


(1) The Professional Practices in Higher Education track: The professional track is intended for early to mid-career higher education professional who have worked in the filed and are seeking theoretical and research-based tools to complement their professional experience.  The course work in this track allows mid-career professionals to place their experiences in higher education while simultaneously deepening their knowledge of their primary subject matter interest pertaining to their professional development in higher education.  Students conclude this program of study with an independent study that is a guided professional practice experience and by writing an integrative paper focused on a particular topic of professional and scholarly interest.


(2) The Practices of Research in Higher Education track: The practices of research track is intended for students who are interested in learning about how knowledge in higher education is produced through research that complements practice.  Students in this track often seek to learn the most current ideas in the field of higher education as well as an understanding of how to create new knowledge about higher education in preparation for a future doctorate.  The coursework in this track allows students to learn the broader context of educational, institutional, and social/cultural forces that drive experiences in higher education while simultaneously understanding the theoretical, methodological, and epistemological tools used by scholars in the field of higher education.  Students conclude this program of study with an independent study that is a guided research experience and by writing an integrative paper focused on a particular topic of scholarly and professional interest.

 

Core courses required:

·       ORL 5521: Introduction to research methods, or equivalent with advisor approval (3)

·       ORLH 4010: Purposes and policies of higher education (3)

·       ORLH 4011: Curriculum and instruction in higher education (3)

·       ORLH 4020: College and university organization and administration (3)

·       ORLH 4031: Financial administration of higher education institutions (3)

·       ORLH 5011: College teaching and learning (3)

·       ORLH 5044: Theories of diversity in higher education (3)

·       ORLH 5199: Special topics: Institutional assessment and evaluation in higher education (3)

·       ORLH 5526: Literature of higher education (3)

·       ORLH 5527: The college professoriate (3)

·       ORLH 6511: Coordinating seminar in higher education (3)

·       ORLH 6900: Research and independent study in higher education or equivalent with advisor approval (3).  (The Integrative paper is prepared in this course.)

 

Of the remaining 8 courses for those in the Professional Practices in Higher Education track:

·       Four (4) should be within the HPSE Program (i.e., beyond the "Core courses required"), with the purpose of developing a concentration in one of the curricular domains (Academic and Developmental Analysis, Organizational and Institutional Analysis, or Social/Cultural and Civic Analysis).  Each course requires the approval of the advisor. 

·       Three (3) should be outside the Program, with at least two (2) of these outside the Department of Organization and Leadership. All extra-Program courses should relate conceptually, substantively, or methodologically to the student's developing area of interest.  All out-of-Program electives require advisor approval.

·       One (1) course will be an Independent Study that will be a guided professional practice experience.


I   Of the remaining 8 courses for those in the Practices of Research in Higher Education track:

         ·       Three (3) should be within the HPSE Program (i.e., beyond the "Core courses required"), with

               the purpose of developing a concentration in one of the curricular domains that pertains to the

               student's scholarly and career interests (Academic and Development Analysis, Organizational

               and Institutional Analysis, or Social/Cultural and Civic Analysis).  Each course requires the

               approval of the advisor.

            ·       Two (2) electives within or outside of the Program, with the purpose of developing a

               concentration in a methodological tradition.

           ·       Two (2) electives outside of the Department of Organization and Leadership.  All extra-Program

              courses should relate conceptually, substantively, or methodologically to the student's

              developing area of interest.  All out-of-Program electives require advisor approval.

          ·       One (1) course will be an independent study that will be a guided research experience.
