After earning her B.A. in Political Science and International Studies from Trinity University, Tomi began her career in education as a 2007 New York City Teach for America corps member. As a corps member, Tomi taught 7th grade math, reading, writing, and social studies in the South Bronx. In addition to teaching, Tomi served as the 7th Grade Team Leader on the school’s leadership team. After teaching in New York, Tomi attended the University of Denver – Sturm College of Law, on a full tuition scholarship, in the hopes of better understanding the political and bureaucratic mechanisms preventing the educational achievement of all children. In her time at law school, Tomi served as the Director of Education Policy for Colorado Senator Michael Johnston during the 2011 legislative session. While at DU Law, she was also the recipient of the Scholastic Excellence Award. Tomi currently works at STRIVE Prep, a high performing charter school network in Denver, where she has taught 6th grade math, and served as a Dean of Students. She is currently the founding Assistant Principal at STRIVE Prep – Montbello campus, and working on the design for STRIVE Prep elementary schools. Tomi will be opening a STRIVE Prep elementary school in 2015-16. Tomi is honored and excited to join a group of transformational leaders as a member of the 2013 SPA NOLA cohort.
