B.S. in Social Services from the University of Massachusetts in 2001 and an M.Ed in Early Childhood Education from Georgia State University in 2003. Maya Jenkins began her teaching career in education as a teacher through joining Teach for America. She spent two years in her placement school inspiring young minds in Kindergarten and second grades. She then continued to make great gains teaching underserved second graders in a Title I school in South Atlanta for the next four years. In 2008, she transferred to Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School where she has taught third and fourth grades for four years. She is currently the K-8 Dean of Curriculum and Assessment at ANCS. Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School is a school started by parents, which focuses on teaching students by using constructivist teaching methods. It is a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools and follows its principles. Maya has engaged in leadership team and is the leader of the curriculum and assessment school-wide committee. She is thrilled to be a part of the 2012 SPA NOLA cohort and looks forward to meeting and learning through this amazing experience.
