SUMMARY OF STEPS REQUIRED IN EARNING AN ED.D. DEGREE AT TEACHERS COLLEGE, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

1. ADMISSION. Seek admission through the Teachers College Admission Office to a program of study leading toward certification for the Ed.D. degree.

 

2. MAJOR ADVISER. Secure approval of a professor to work with you in an area of specialization.

3. PROGRAM PLAN. Prepare a Program Plan of at least 90 points, in accordance with the approved program of your specialization. At least six courses taken for letter grades must be included. Obtain major adviser's written approval. (Plan must be submitted to Office of Doctoral Studies as early as possible, not later than the session in which you complete 60 points of graduate study).

4. STATEMENT OF TOTAL PROGRAM. Prepare a statement giving your plans for meeting total program objectives. Have adviser indicate approval by signing it, and file it in the Office of Doctoral Studies.

5. CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION. Apply and take (with major adviser's approval), the Certification Examination. See Academic Calendar for dates and deadlines.

6. TWENTY POINTS IN TEACHERS COLLEGE COURSES ARE REQUIRED AFTER TAKING CERTIFICATION FOR THE FIRST TIME.

7. DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION FOR CERTIFICATION. Positive recommendation by your Department, based on satisfactory test scores, grades, and appraisal, is a prerequisite to certification.

8. MAINTAIN CONTINUOUS REGISTRATION.

9. DISSERTATION PROPOSAL APPROVAL.

10. DEPARTMENT DISSERTATION CONFERENCE.

11. COMPLETION OF REQUIRED COURSES AND STATEMENT OF TOTAL PROGRAM.

12. FINAL ORAL DEFENSE OF THE DISSERTATION.

13. DEPOSIT OF THE DISSERTATION AND ABSTRACTS.

SUMMARY OF STEPS REQUIRED IN EARNING A PH.D. DEGREE AT TEACHERS COLLEGE, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

1. ADMISSION.Seek admission through the Teachers College Admission Office to a program of study leading toward certification for the Ph.D. degree.

2. MAJOR ADVISER. Secure approval from an approved Ph.D. sponsor at Teachers College to work with you in your program.

3. MAINTAIN CONTINUOUS REGISTRATION.

4. PROGRAM PLAN. Prepare a Program Plan showing distribution of courses (completed and proposed) for meeting requirements set by the appropriate Area Committee and department. Secure major adviser's approval, and submit form to the Office of Doctoral Studies.

5. STATEMENT OF TOTAL PROGRAM.Prepare a statement giving your plans for meeting total program objectives, have adviser indicate approval by signing it, and file it in the Office of Doctoral Studies.

6. CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION. Apply and take (with major adviser's approval) the Certification Examination. See Academic Calendar for dates and deadline.

7. FOREIGN LANGUAGES.Pass examination in foreign languages if required by your field of study.

8. COMPLETION OF COURSE REQUIREMENTS.

9. AWARD OF THE MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY DEGREE. Application to be made when all requirements for the Ph.D. degree have been completed with the exception of the dissertation.

10. DISSERTATION PROPOSAL APPROVAL.

11. THE ADVANCED SEMINAR.

12. FINAL DEFENSE OF THE DISSERTATION.

13. DEPOSIT OF THE DISSERTATION.
