ESCAPE Curriculum

ESCAPE-NOW  (Khemka & Hickson, 2015):

We are pleased to announce that  ESCAPE-NOW: Effective Strategy-Based Curriculum for Abuse Prevention and Empowerment for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities-NOW (Khemka & Hickson, 2015) is now available at a dedicated internet site where it can be downloaded free of charge. ESCAPE-NOW addresses the need for an updated, effective, evidence-based abuse prevention curriculum to teach women and men with intellectual and developmental disabilities to make effective, self-protective decisions in a wide range of sexual, physical, and verbal abuse situations. The development and field-testing of the newly completed ESCAPE-NOW  curriculum (Khemka & Hickson, 2015) was funded in part by a grant from the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC).

ESCAPE-NOW, which is based on ESCAPE-DD, has several new features, including:

  • A wider range of updated sexual, physical, and verbal abuse vignette situations that include cyber abuse, financial abuse, disability-specific abuse as well as healthy interpersonal interactions;
  • Individual participant binders with activities and lesson-by-lesson assessments;
  • Updated, user-friendly decision-making chart with a streamlined 4-step strategy;
  • Technology-based options, including:
    • (1) A video version of the Vignette Booklet consisting of lesson-by-lesson video files with audio narration;
    • (2) A Power Point version of the Vignette Booklet consisting of a lesson-by-lesson presentation of the visual vignette illustrations accompanied by the written text;
    • An additional alternative format option consisting of SMARTBoard applications for 16 of the Activity Sheet activities.

All components of ESCAPE-NOW (Khemka & Hickson, 2015) may be accessed, downloaded, and printed free of charge at the following Wiki Scholars web address:

www.escapenow.wikischolars.columbia.edu

The ESCAPE-NOW  Wiki includes detailed printing and assembly instructions and an ESCAPE-NOW Usability Survey. An instructor/staff training module provides an overview of the curriculum components and general tips for trainers, including a demonstration of how to teach the 4-step decision-making strategy.
