Our Program • FAQs
Do I have to be in Peace Corps to become a Peace Corps Fellow at Teachers College? Can I apply to both the Peace Corps and the Fellows Program at TC at the same time?
You must be either a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer or in the midst of completing your service as a Peace Corps Volunteer to be eligible for our program. You can not apply to both the Peace Corps Fellows Program and Peace Corps at the same time.
What is the main difference between being a Peace Corps Fellow and being a regular student pursuing their M.A. in Education at Teachers College?
Fellows receive a transitional certificate that allows them to work full time as a salaried teacher while at the same time attending classes part time. All other students take classes full time and spend time in the classroom as unpaid student teachers.
What are some of the benefits to becoming a Peace Corps Fellow at Teachers College?
In addition to receiving a salary and benefits as a full time teacher, Fellows also receive tuition support through scholarship endowments and AmeriCorps grants. This support covers approximately half of tuition costs. Additionally, Fellows receive extensive training, workshops, and hands on support from the PC Fellows Program Staff.
How many people are accepted into the program each year?
This varies from year to year because of funding and other considerations. This past year more than 20 new Fellows were accepted into the program. Each year approximately 1/3 of applicants are accepted into our program.
When does the program begin?
Each year the program begins on or around the beginning of Summer Session A. This year the new cohort arrived on May 14th.
What if I'm currently serving as a volunteer and won't COS until August?
You will need to talk to your Country Director. In the past some applicants have conferred with their Country Directors and been given conditional approval that if they are accepted into the Fellows program, they may COS early. This is NOT an official Peace Corps policy. Each case is decided at the discretion of individual Country Directors.
Can I apply to more than one program at Teachers College (e.g. TESOL and English)?
No, Teachers College policy prohibits applicants from applying to more than one program at once.
Do I have to submit all my application materials at the same time? Where do I submit my application materials?
You may submit materials as they become available or finished. Items such as recommendation letters or a signed copy of your DOS should be taken care of at the beginning as these often take the longest to complete. All application materials must be submitted directly to the Peace Corps Fellows office.
