Dear Friends of the Global Campaign for Peace Education,

A little more than a year ago Global Education Associates, in partnership with the Peace Education Center at Teachers College, Columbia University took over the responsibility of coordinating the activities of the Global Campaign for Peace Education (GCPE). For our first year we had the modest goal of increasing information sharing primarily through the web-based newsletter. Thanks to the very generous contributions of members of the GCPE we’ve been able to produce a peace education specific, rich and informative monthly offering featuring news, field reports, publications, events and job listings.

Our goals for the coming year are a bit more ambitious.
We plan to increase the visibility of the GCPE, and peace education in general by launching a new website and distributing a new logo. Via the website we will clarify the goals of the Campaign; offer more concrete suggestions of types of activities and actions that might contribute to the achievement of the Campaign goals; and establish an online database and reporting system to better track peace education related organizations, events and activities taking place around the world. The website will also feature a new regional networking section where people can interact directly with informed practitioners (advisors to the GCPE and the International Institute on Peace Education) in different world regions. In the months to come we will be keeping you informed as these new tools take shape.

As you may know, the GCPE is coordinated almost entirely on a volunteer basis.
To make the actions described above possible we are assembling a new team of volunteers. Five eager peace educators have already committed their time and energy to supporting these developments. However, we still need much more help!

We are looking for people from around the world –in New York in particular – who can commit to volunteering just a few hours a week.

We particularly need help in web design, communication, report and information gathering, outreach and fundraising. If you are able to help in any of these areas please email us (volunteer@peace-ed-campaign.org) and let us know your talents and availability.

The newsletter also needs your support!

In particular we are looking for volunteers that are willing to write the “welcome letter” (what you are reading now) for future issues. The “welcome letter” is a great space to briefly share emerging concerns and possibilities for peace education from your organization or world region. We are also looking for educators who would be willing to be interviewed to be featured in a new monthly “profiles of peace educators” section; organizational activity reports; and peace education success stories. If you are able to contribute to the newsletter in any of the above mentioned ways please email the newsletter editor directly (news@peace-ed-campaign.org).

For those new to the GCPE, the Campaign seeks to foster a culture of peace in communities around the world through the achievement of two broad and general goals:

1) To build public awareness and political support for the introduction of peace education into all spheres of education, including non-formal education, in all schools throughout the world.

2) To promote the education of all teachers to teach for peace.

Day to day, participating individuals and organizations of the GCPE work independently, conducting their normal activities in contributing to the achievement of these goals. The GCPE, as a network, helps bring these separate entities into cooperative coexistence, strengthening the voices of many into a roaring chorus guiding the way for the advancement of peace education around the world. We congratulate the courage of all GCPE members for their contributions to nurturing a culture of peace through education. We look forward to your continued support of the Campaign.

Yours in peace and solidarity,

Tony Jenkins

Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict Peace Education Reference Group Seeking Evaluations of Peace Education/ Conflict Resolution Programs
The purpose of this project is to identify and clarify the current state of evaluation and research on the effectiveness and impact of peace education and conflict resolution education (PE/CRE) around the world. Specifically, this project seeks to identify what evidence exists about the impact and effectiveness of PE/CRE, what methodologies and approaches are most robust for generating this evidence, and what gaps exist in research and evaluation. The first phase of this project focuses on collecting and making available evaluations and research on PE/CRE; thus, I am writing to seek existing evaluations that your organization may have undertaken, or evaluations that you are otherwise aware of. We aim to collect as broad a scope of materials as possible (with particular interest in programs outside the US/Canadian context). Evaluations may be summative or formative in nature; the main consideration is that they reflect work conducted in the fields of PE/CRE. Please send any information, including evaluations, to: karnula@gmail.com

ABOUT THE GLOBAL CAMPAIGN FOR PEACE EDUCATION

Founded in 1999, the Global Campaign for Peace Education (GCPE) is an international organized network that promotes peace education among schools, families and communities to transform the culture of violence into a culture of peace. The Global Campaign for Peace Education is presently being coordinated by Global Education Associates in partnership with the Peace Education Center at Teachers College, Columbia University. (www.tc.edu/PeaceEd/newsletter).

Peace education is a holistic, participatory process that includes teaching for and about human rights, nonviolent responses to conflict, social and economic justice, gender equity, environmental sustainability, international law, disarmament, traditional peace practices and human security. The methodology of peace education encourages reflection, critical thinking, cooperation, and responsible action. It promotes multiculturalism, and is based on values of dignity, equality and respect.Peace education is intended to prepare students for democratic participation in schools and society.

The Global Campaign for Peace Education has two goals:

1. To see peace education integrated into all curricula, community and family education worldwide to become a part of life;
2. To promote the education of all teachers to teach for peace.
