Intensive Upper and Lower Extremity Training for Children with Cerebral Palsy
We are currently RECRUITING children with CEREBRAL PALSY between the ages of 4 and 18 YEARS to participate in a study examining the effects of extensive upper and lower extremity training on hand and arm use and lower extremity function (e.g., balance, gait) in children with Cerebral Palsy. This study is performed in a three-week fun day-camp setting with other children at Teachers College, Columbia University located in New York City.
The upper and lower extremity training is a motor-learning based approach to engage children in fun activities necessitating use of both their hands and legs. Our previous studies, where we tested intensive upper limb training in children with hemiplegic CP, have revealed promising results and we wish to apply the same principles to the lower limb function. We are trying to understand efficacy of intensive treatment to both the upper and lower extremities.
We have been providing interventions to children with cerebral palsy since 1997 and more than 160 children have participated (many several times). Emphasis is placed on making it an enjoyable experience for participants. Our group has published extensively on efficacy and best-practice of physical rehabilitation and we are recognized as leaders in the field. Participation is free.
