Introduction

Welcome to Teachers College and the amazing city of New York! We know that for those of you who are parents, time is a very precious commodity and is very scarce. In an effort to assist you, we at the Student Life Center have created this Family Guide to get you started as you look for baby sitters, preschools, public schools or after-school programs for your child(ren).

This Family Guide contains hints for selecting childcare providers, emergency phone numbers, the location of hospitals in the Morningside Heights neighborhood, and other information.

The guide is separated into five sections; the first section, "How Do I Find a Babysitter?" lists phone numbers for nannies and babysitters. For parents wishing to send their infants and toddlers to childcare centers outside the home, the second section, "What Are My Childcare Options?" explains how to find the right child care setting and includes a directory of some of the child care centers in the Morningside Heights neighborhood. The third section, "What School District Does My Child Go To?" goes through the steps of enrolling your elementary or middle school-aged child in New York City public schools as well as providing a list of elementary and middle schools in our district (district 3). Section four, "Where Do I Send My Child After School?" provides information about after-school programs and section five, "What Do I Do In Case Of…?" lists emergency procedures and important telephone numbers.

Parenting is a full-time job and requires much time, patience, and dedication. We wish you the best of luck and hope that the information in this guide provides you with valuable information so you can make the best decisions for your entire family. Please feel free to forward suggestions on how we can improve this publication to the Student Life Center.

Disclaimer:
This guide is by no means an exhaustive list of family-related resources in New York City. Additionally, all tuition information is quoted for the 2004-2005 academic year and is therefore subject to change. Please call each service provider for the most up-to-date information. Furthermore, the Student Life Center is not ranking or recommending any schools. We are simply providing this resource as a means for you to get started in searching for childcare and school-related options for your children. We encourage you to talk directly with schools, baby sitters, and after-school programs to ensure that your child will get exactly what he or she needs from the individual or program.
