What School District Does My Child Go To?
Schools in New York City are separated into districts; there are over 25 districts in all of New York City. Six of these are in Manhattan, beginning with District 1 in the Lower East Side and ending with District 6 in the Washington Heights neighborhood. The school district in the Morningside Heights neighborhood is District 3. Each district has its own superintendent; Roser Salavert is the superintendent for District 3.
Enrolling your child in school can be an arduous process. In New York City it is not required for children to attend kindergarten. However, if you choose to send your child to kindergarten, he/she must be 5 years old by December 31 of the year of enrollment. Pre-registration for kindergarten takes place in May for the following school year. For all other grades, registration is during the first week of school.
To register, you must bring your child to the school along with proof of address (either an electric or gas bill) and an immunization record. You need a birth or baptismal certificate too! If you wish to send your child to a school outside of your district or in another borough, you must take your child to that school and register him/her there.
