Buenos Aires to Neuquen
Aerolineas Argentina Flight 2862 departed 1 December at 10.35am and arrived in Neuquen, about 600 miles to the southwest, around 12.50 pm. I drew only one passenger in flight, using most of the flight time either to discuss Neuquen with Enrique, or to observe the pampas countryside below. From the air, the capital of Neuquen Province appears as fragmentary interruptions on a long green rectangle along the Neuquen River, a huge but lonely patch of irrigated life in an otherwise semi-arid, extended belt of land east of the Andes and the Chilean border. This small western city could hardly differ more sharply from the national capital we had just left. Despite its extreme eastern location and the economic importance of other parts of the country, huge and sprawling Buenos Aires remains inordinately the source of all power in Argentina.
