Above, with North (N) to the left, and East to the top, is an outline of Bahrain. It is provided to indicate the relative location of points or phenomena discussed elsewhere in the website, and to generally provide background. They points shown are : (1) the international airport, (2) Al Muharraq, the old city, (3) Al Manama, the newer city, (4) the University of Bahrain and Arabian Gulf University, (5) the causeway to Saudi Ariabia, and (6) sites of numerous ancient burial mounds. The light yellow and light brown portions indicate the very arid central section where may oil wells exist, but few or no crops can be grown. The blue surrounding the island represents the Persian Gulf. Not discernable from this map is the island nation's location in the world, about midway along the western side of the Gulf, attached by the causeway (5) to the nearby Arabian pennisula. At the north end of the gulf is present-day Kuwait, but thousands of years ago, it was the locus of the world's first large cities like Uruk. At the south end of the Gulf is the gateway to the Indian Ocean.
