One way conversation (left) and Two Smugs (right) are the two dual portraits suggested by four of the solo portraits created for Chippery. Each duet emerged rather inevitably from two of the individual portraits, as follows. The Shrewish Customer ( thumbnail upper left corner, this page) was obviously lacing into someone, and the Put-Upon Baker (upper right corner) looked the victim of someone's verbal abuse, so they seemed created for juxtaposition. The other pair of portraits looked equally like they were made for each other but because they were in tune or in sync rather than because they were in complimentary attitudes. The Haughtily Smug Man (lower left corner, this page) looked supremely self-confident of his position (whatever it was) and the Hesitatingly Smug Youth (lower right corner) looked eager to emulate him (even though a bit hesitatingly), regarding him carefully while shaping his face with a similar disdain. .
