Robert P. Taylor's JuryDuty: reflections on a trial
The alternate and the dismissed juror
Above is the sole drawings done of the alternate juror and a marker where the juror who shortchanged everyone would have appeared, had he done his duty. The alternate juror played a crucial role of backup, guarding against a mistrial should any of the remaining 12 jurors be dismissed or become ill. The dismissed juror had to be let go because he failed to come to the deliberations. When still with us, he appeared to think his own activities were more important than anything the jury could engage in, and one suspects his whole life was probably similarly oriented.
