Robert P. Taylor's JuryDuty: reflections on a trial

Jurors Three and Five -- architect and artist

Juror Three was an architect. I didn't get a particularly good sketch of him and had to merge two different ones to produce this. When we were deliberating about the expert witness opinions on how the tee shirt got burned the way it did, I made some comment which amused him and he asked me if, like him, I had been a pyromaniac as a boy. Naturally I denied everything. Juror Five was me. This was the tenth time I had done jury duty in New York City, though only the third or fourth time I had been selected for a jury and served in a trial. In a trial, there never seems to be enough evidence to satisfy you and witnesses never seem to agree with each other as closely as you would like. Nevertheless, it is always a memorable experience. This is the only time I ever sketched any of the people involved and may be the last. It makes the experience more memorable, but it's frustrating because the people and events you would most like to draw are those which circumstance usually prevents you from drawing!
