This self-portrait like many another in Reflect was done late at night - 10:25 pm. Whether this accounts for the sombre look on so many faces, I can't be sure. The one done in Amsterdam (yellowish inset) isn't so sombre but it, too, was done late. This is one of the many (all insets) sketches of a fairly classically representational style. In general, those in pencil (insets top ) seem softer regardless of expression, probably because of the soft shading possible with pencil. While there are exceptions to any hypothesis, some of the ink drawings (inset bottom) to me have a sharper, harder cast to them.
