This drawing was done at 9:10 pm in fine tip marker on white sketch pad paper. The head was 6 cm high; 5.5 cm front to back. The purpose was to try a profile again (inset top left), but moving toward abstraction. While it worked in terms of fewer lines and less shading, the degree of abstraction generated was slight, compared to some earlier sketches (inset top right and bottom left) of various descriptions.

The next trial produced a reversion to representation which mirrored this marker sketch but falling back to more shading and detail (inset bottom right). Clearly an abstract profile still lay ahead.
