Aristide Maillol (1861-1944) - Two works, two exhibits

There are separate exhibits of drawings for each of two Maillol works in the site: Springtime, and Summer. Each can be visited clicking on either its image above, or its name-link below. Springtime includes 6 drawings, all of Maillol's bronze of that name, exibited in MOMA in the early spring of 2000. Summer includes 4 drawings: (a) 1 of a plaster version of the figure that appeared in the same MOMA exhibit as Springtime, and (b) 3 of a bronze version of "summer" that is in the Met's permanent collection. They represent two of three pieces commissioned in 1910 by a Russian impressed by Pamona, Maillol's Salon entry that year. The two figures are quite different - "spring" seems young and full of undimmed promise; "summer," mature and the promise less vibrant. At several points during all the drawing, I would find myself wondering what "autumn" and "winter" might have looked like, had Maillol worked them up as well. (Of course I rather suspected they would have been like "summer" - most of his other figures certainly are......)
