Background Observations

As the hands-drawing-a-sculpture image in this page's corners suggests, See Anew presents drawings of the art of others. Though of quite different works, the drawings all have one thing in common: the process of creating them helped me see each work anew. Though the site presents them for several reasons, one is analogous to the reason just given for making the drawings, namely, a belief that site visitors may also "see anew" some of these sculptures, just by examining and comparing alternative drawings of each work. The site is presented for other reasons, too, though. It is part of my effort to explore the utility of images, especially sketched images, as a form of valuable information paralleling or complementing related textually represented information (see Related Taylor websites). It is also partly an accidental outgrowth of other websites I've developed, that is, See Anew is also a context for exploring the influence of digital technology on image making, modifying, and displaing. Today, technological copying of images is so easy that it obscures some of the issues involved. Finally, this site offers a new way to present evidence of the process of developing a drawing.

With respect to these last points, though the images themselves were created in a rather ad hoc fashion, for a variety of reasons, in every case, the drawing or sketch was scanned into the computer and eventually resized to fit some display area in See Anew. In every case, once scanned in, the drawing was manipulated by software, producing something different from just what was scanned in. All this is dicussed at various points throughout the site, but is concentrated particularly in Digitization and drawing and Site's artist and creator (see links below).

You can contribute to the improvement of this site and to further development of the ideas it explores by viewing its structure and arrangements and providing feedback through the Comments link on every page. Suggestions will be welcome.
