Robert P. Taylor's Webbery:A web gallery for two-dimenison art
The Webbery -- Main Page
The Webberywas the first web gallery created by Professor Robert P. Taylor of Teachers College, Columbia University. When it was initially made accessible on the web on 1 September 1996, it included the digitizations of only a few dozen drawings and water colors. During the year or so following that opening, Webberywas expanded to its present size, exihibiting 295 drawings and works in various other media.
This first drawing-based Taylor site was structured to foster self-directed browsing and allows the visitor to choose among several alternate concurrent exhibition schemes through which the individual images can be displayed. Any two schemes may include the same work of art (this is a property the web provides) but in doings so, each scheme "installs" that work in a different context. The alternative exhibiting schemes are presented in Index to all Exhibits below. Comments on these schemes or other aspects of this site are welcome and may be forwarded through Comments, also below. Finally, both because the wide range of its drawings sugested schemes for grouping the digitized images and because implementing these schemes revealed how fruitfully the web could support the implementatin of exhibits embodying those schemes, building has led directly to the design and implementation of a number of subsequent websites. Some of them are presented in Related subsequent Taylor websites, below, usually noting something of the debt of each to Webbery. Since this site preceded them, this reference to offspring was added to Webberyas an editorial change much later, in October 2001.
