Robert P. Taylor's Musicians: Reflections of Music Making
Evaristo Baschenis and Johannes VerMeer, mid-1600s - keyboard musicians
Above are two images based on paintings of keyboard musicians, the first (left), ca 1665, by Evaristo Baschenis, the other, 1670-1672, by Johannes VerMeer. My drawing in each case is of a portion of the original. In the first case, though there were two other musicians in the original, I selected just the keyboard musician, because it is a self-portrait of Baschenis. The second painting is only a portion, too, the sole musician, reflecting the title, "Young woman standing at a virginal". Each reflects the suitablility of musicians as subjects and each reflects the importance of music in the second half of 17th Century in certain European social circles.
