These two drawings were done during successive performances of Handel's Messiah in Riverside Church on 5 and 6 May 2001, both on the same page of the score, the first of the chorus "And he shall purify". The 5 May drawing (left), on the upper half of the page, was done at some point during the Saturday concert, because I wanted a rear view of Vernon to complement the front view I had drawn of him (inset left), a few weeks earlier. The 6 May drawing (right), on the lower half of the same page, was of the other cellist in this performance, Greg Hesselink, a cellist whom I had never seen before this Messiah production, but one who, like cellist Vernon Regehr, bassist Saskia Lane, and bassoonist Jeff Marchand, was near enough for me to observe and draw easily.
