Here, basses Matt Hommez, David Orcutt, and Brad Wilson, sketched on a program of Christmas music, inevitably suggest the three wise men looking for the Christ child. The idea serendipitously seized me as I sat there, and I could not resist. The three basses even contributed by appearing to look expectantly in different directions. It's not so odd musically, however. This annual program at Riverside Church includes many sung messages about the events celebrated by Christians at that time of year, and musicians who do not feel the spirit behind the music they are performing can not communicate the joy and expectation the occasion represents, while those who do feel it, are much more likely to be able to communicate it (insets).
