Robert P. Taylor's Musicians: Reflections of Music Making
Timpani and Trumpet in 22 April 2000 rehearsal for next day's Easter Service
When these drawings were made, the two musicians depicted were both rehearsing with the choir at Riverside Church on the morning before Easter. The drawing notes that Anthony was drawn at 10:15 as he leaned over the timpani. Bob Haley, the trumpeter was either accompanying a hymn or the Hallelujiah Chorus as I drew him, but I failed to note which. I also drew the trombone player (inset left) on the same bulletin but on a different page, as he played one verse of a hymn. The brass and timpani were right behind me, so it was very easy to see them clearly - the major constraint was time. A hymn only takes a couple minutes; a single verse takes no more than 30 or 40 seconds! A minor constraint was my singing at the same time I was drawing. If it's a hymn I know - I can, if it's not - I can't.
