Both images above are from drawings done on 29 March 1997, during rehearsals for the next day's Easter servie. The image on the left is extremely sketchy but in some ways that is appropriate for a drawing of a timpanist actually playing, given the amount he or she moves about, tuning, selecting the correct mallet, striking, damping the reverberation, and so on. I was just trying to get a feel for the timpanist's motion. It was probably appropriate, too, that the digital image is not bordered or framed - it is a glimse in mid-act. The pair of images on the right show Anthony at other points in the same rehearsal. The upper, more sketchy image shows him standing and apparently damping the reverberation as he watches the music. The lower, more detailed drawing shows him adjusting the instrument or reading the music, it is difficult to be certain which, and he may be doing both simultaneously.
