Anthony Morris
New World Symphony
Performance
This was drawn 22 October 2000, during performance of Anton Dvorak's symphony No. 9 "From the New World". Since there was no singing in the symphony, I could draw at will and produced this most intersting drawing of Anthony. I had drawn him twice before (see All Anthony below) but this has to be the most interesting of the three. Bass players are quite unique among string players because the size of the instrument is so great, but compared to the
size impression one gets from other angles (other insets), this is startling. My choosing to draw this particular image was, once again, serendiptious. I determined to go out during the symphony and draw someone in the
orchestra, but had not identified any specific subject. When I got there and paused down on the floor, out of sight of the audience and just behind Anthony, I immediately realized what I should draw. The result correctly suggests almost a duet between partners and conveys clearly the size of the instrument from an angle the audience never sees.
