Like Bob Convery (upper left inset), Mark Miller (upper right inset), and several other singers and instrumentalist who have been part of Riverside Church Choir for some period during the nearly two decades I have sung in it, Chandler doesn't just sing or play, he also composes. A music faculty member at one of the New York City area universities, he always seems to be carrying (1) some music-related papers he is reading for some article he is writing, or (2) some notes for music he is composing. In this sketch, he was just contemplating the sound of his own music, as performed by the Riverside Choir in a Sunday Morning service. As the drawing notation indicates, the piece was a Magnificat. Unfortunately, What he heard pleased him, I'm sure. These composers and others, like Shelton Becton (lower left), add a wide variety of new music to the rich sounds heard in this magnificent church.
