Robert P. Taylor's Musicians:
Reflections of Music Making

David Jackson
Tenor
sings Burleigh's
Steal Away

This Sunday, 1 July 2001 drawing was made as David performed the familiar Steal Away, in the service. As good performances can occasionally do, it made the familiar sound unfamiliar in a wonderful way. Even as the audience recognized the words and melody as familiar old stuff, David's projection of the spirit beneath the song comanded the audience to excited attention. It is interesting that the only other drawing of David in this site (left inset) depicts him at Riverside's Southland concert of music less than a year earlier, listening intently to music by Burleigh, Dvorak, and Dvorak's other three major African-American students. Perhaps David was rethinking his interpretation of such songs as he listened, and the performance of "Steal Away" depicted here was the eventual result.......
