Reflections of Music Making
These studies of Jose Limon Company's musical director were done on November 14, 1997 as he conducted orchestra, choir, and dancers in the Missa Brevis. It appears at the top of the very first page of the score, so it was done while the orchestra played the introductory two pages and no singing was involved. I also did some study sketches off the score (inset left) that year and then, finally, having got the feeling for David's appearance conducting, I made a fuller, more dramatic drawing of him at the concert, during the performan of The Winged , a piece that involved orchestra and dancers but not choir. Free for a few minutes, I went out and sat with the orchestra and drew him more carefully (inset right).
