Boy Soprano
Elijah
This was drawn on 7 May at the dress rehearsal for two 1998 performances of Elijah at Riverside Church, 8 and 10 May. Just like the picture (left inset) of Peter Schoettle, principal French horn player in the orchestra for the performance, this was drawn in the score, on the last page, inside the back cover. The part of the boy soprano which this drawing depicts is a wonderful one and this boy did it well. Elijah
(right inset) has called for rain, to break a severe draught, and, nervous that God has not immediately produced the rain, sends a youth up to higher ground, to see if he can't spot some clouds beginning to form and move toward them. In the massive nave of Riverside Church, the conductor had this boy mount into the pulpit to sing his brief part. The drawing captures his first reply to Elijah. The dramatic plaintiveness of it could only come from a boy soprano.....
