Robert P. Taylor's Musicians: Reflections of Music Making

Jessica Marsten sings the prelude to 1 July 2001 Service

The director advised the choir at the conclusion of pre-service rehearsal on this partuclar Sunday, to gather a few minutes early ouside the rear of the sanctuary, and to slip inside, and stand at the back, to hear Jessica sing "Exultate Deo" as the prelude. This drawings depicts what I saw. Jessica sang very well, but the nave is so long that the soloist is tiny if one stands in the rear, over 200 feet away, just where I stood to draw this. Though okay for listening, unfortunately for me, this was another example of "too far away" for seeing clearly, especially to draw (inset left). Fortunately for me, I have been close enough to draw Jessica many times (see All Jessica below). The interesting thing about this day was that not long after drawing this "speck in the distance" and showing it to David Jackson before we processed in for the service, I drew David singing "Steal Away" during the service, from a location near enough to do a good drawing (other inset).
