Robert P. Taylor's Musicians: Reflections of Music Making
Jeff Marchand, bassoonist, two views, Saturday rehearsal, Sunday performance
This bassoonist was seated less than ten feet from my chair in the choir ranks, so when we weren't singing, I began to study him, and almost immediately decided to draw him. The first drawing was done on Saturday during our rehearsal as the orchestra played the introduction to the Messiah, and was drawn right on the score, on the table of contents, a line of which appears at the top of the drawing above. The head in the foreground was that of a chorister seated in front of me. The second drawing was done the next day, Sunday, during the performance but during a portion when we were not singing. This drawing was done on a small piece of drawing paper, in about five minutes, just to get a different view of the bassoonist from the day before.
