Robert P. Taylor's Musicians: Reflections of Music Making

Saskia Lane, bass player
two sketches, two days, two Messiah score pages

The two rapid sketches of Saskia above were several I did of Messiah performers, somewhere, sometime, in my Messiah score (see Messiah drawings below, for others). Such a drawing takes 10 or 15 seconds, and can only capture the general gesture, posture, or feature of the performer, so I usually do them to prepare for or to complement other drawings of the same individual. That of Saskia's arm and head from the back (left) was done to prepare for doing her more carefully (inset left). That of her face (right) was done 5 May to complement the fuller drawings (again, inset left) that did not show her face as much, and was drawn as the alto sang "Oh Thou that tellest good tidings to Zion", and the choir waited to sing its portion, a fragment of which appears behind the drawing.
