Here are musicians I drew upon programs, bulletins, or other miscellaneous paper. Why? The answers vary: sometimes the text seemed fitting, sometimes I had no proper drawing paper with me, sometimes I intended only a skeletal sketch but got carried away, and so on. The drawing of Jessica (final thumbnail) is an example. It was done on the bulletin, right beside the words and beneath the single line of audience response music in which she, as cantor that morning, was leading them. I could have drawn it somewhere else, but what could have been as fitting? The drawing immediately before that, of Jim Byars playing his oboe, is another equally good example. The text appearing in the background of the drawing includes Jim's name and the titles of the compositions he is playing. In either case, the process illustrates how much of what I do is triggered by chance -- regardless of the plans I make before hand and with which I'm proceeding when an "accident" occurs. Drawing on scores is serendipitous, too (see Exhibit of Musicians upon Music below).
