Reflections of Music Making
Nicholas Cotalessa, Singing Doxology, Riverside, 13 August 2000
This was drawn 13 August 2000, upon my noticing when we rose to sing the doxology that Nick, because it was summer choir seating, was standing almost in front of me. Because he normally sits far away, I decided that while he was that close, I should capitalize on it to draw him, adding his image to others drawn singing the doxology (left and right insets). Save for a little adjustment to the darkness and contrast later in the computer, this drawing abovewas completed on the bulletin in the 30-45 seconds it takes to sing the Doxology . As noted elsewhere (see insets), the brevity of the doxology precludes both preliminary sketching and on-the-spot modification. You aim for the essence of the person from your drawing's perspective, and draw, fast and minimally. In this case, using the back page of bulletin as paper added to the drawing an image of Riverside church gratis.
