Robert P. Taylor's Musicians: Reflections of Music Making

Rick Stone, soprano saxaphone, Handel's "Bright Seraphim"
trumpet line against soprano singer -- Sunday Service, 10 June 2001

As noted elsewhere (inset left), Handel's aria with trumpet obligato, "Bright Seraphim" is very popular with soprano's, whether they get an actual trumpet player to do it with them; or just let the organist add the trumpet part to the organ accompaniment. This was a first, though, for me: a Handel trumpet line played on a soprano sax. Rick was the soprano's husband, but whether that's why he did it is immaterial. It worked, and it was quite interesting. At the same time, it sounded much different than when Ray Mase (inset right) or some other equally good trumpeter plays it on the trumpet. Music makers never stop generating surprises!
