Robert P. Taylor's Musicians: Reflections of Music Making
Shelton Bechton - Riverside Church, twice on 18 February 2001
The left image is from a drawing made Sunday, 18 February 2001 between rehearsal and service while I sat down beside Shelton in Christ Chapel where he was waiting with the Inspirational Choir until the service began and they could enter. I drew him while he looked over his music, and got something of his absorption in it. The second image is digitized from a drawing I made later that morning, when the advertised part of the service had come to an end but everyone had been asked to remain seated while Shelton alone played and sang, "He touched me". As everyone listened I drew this. Shelton was about 50 feet away as I drew, so I had to forget about fine details and exact likeness concentrate on his general presence. He played and sang for three or four minutes, so I drew fast. Above is the result, shaded and touched up a bit on the computer after digitization.
