Robert P. Taylor's Musicians:
Reflections of Music Making
Ernst Barlach
(1870-1938)
Singing Man
bronze
(1928)
This was drawn 16 June 1998, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. This bronze "Singing Man" (1928) was temporarily on display at the entry to a second floor gallery and attracted my attention. The spirit with which Barlach had rendered the singer was genuine and made me think of many singers I had worked with in various groups. The fact that he happened to be sitting down and relaxed did little to lessen this feeling that the sculptor had captured the musician at work. Comparison with several drawings of singers singing elsewhere in this site makes that clear (insets below).
