Robert P. Taylor's Musicians: Reflections of Music Making
From the southland to the New World 22 October 2000
Riverside Choir and Festival Orchestra - Riverside Church
This concert explored the creative musical interplay between Anton Dvorak and the four important African American composers who studied with him in New York just before the beginning of the 20th Century . The three, Maurice Arnold, Harry T. Burleigh, and Will Marion Cook learned from him but they also gave him their knowlege and understanding of American music as they knew it, contributing mightily to his eventual Ninth Symphony in e minor, from the New World. Since much of the choir's time was spent listening (we only sang four Burleigh spirituals), I did some drawing and produced the images above.
