Robert P. Taylor's Musicians:
Reflections of Music Making

Tim Smith
Accompanies Ellington
Come Sunday

This drawing was done 22 February, 2001, during a Thursday evening rehearsal of the Riverside Choir, at this point looking at Duke Ellington's Come Sunday, to ready it for performance the next Sunday. Because a sudden snow storm late that afternoon had made New York streets hazardous and slowed travel of all kinds, we were proceding slowly, hoping more singers would arrive. I thus caught Tim as we waited. I'd done Tim before in this pose, and decided to catch it again. Even from behind and even waiting to play, each accompanist displays a characteristic set of postures and this is Tim - leaning forward slightly, arms to the side, slightly outward, hands planted on the bench. Other stages of accompanyment are just as unique, whether of Tim (top insets) or someone else, like Mark Miller (lower inset). Each individual pianist in each stage of waiting or playing displays characteristic poses, analogous but distinct.
