  • Susan H. Fuhrman, Ph.D. President of the College

    Dr. Susan Fuhrman is the tenth President of Teachers College, Columbia University, joining the College in August 2006. She is the founding Director and Chair of the Management Committee of the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE), and former President of the National Academy of Education (2009-2013). She previously served as Dean of the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education, as well as the school's George and Diane Weiss Professor of Education. Dr. Fuhrman received bachelor's and master's degrees in history from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, and a Ph.D. in political science and education from Columbia University, New York.   • Thomas James, Ph.D. Provost and Dean of the College

    Dr. Thomas James became Provost, Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs for Teachers College on July 1, 2007, and also is on the faculty of TC’s Department of Arts and Humanities. Dr. James was formerly Dean of the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously Dr. James was Vice Dean and Professor of Educational History at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education, and prior to that, a tenured professor at Brown University. He received his bachelor’s degree from Harvard University and his master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. A historian by training, he is the author of Exile Within: the Schooling of Japanese Americans 1942–45. He also has written on law and the history of education, and on educational governance and control. As a child, Dr. James attended the famous Laboratory School at the University of Chicago, founded by John Dewey. (Website: Office of the Provost and Dean of the College)
  • Harvey Spector, M.A., M.C.R.P Vice President for Finance and Administration

    Harvey Spector became the Vice President for Finance and Administration in June of 2007. He received master’s degrees in Public Administration, and City and Regional Planning from Ohio State University. Spector, a native New Yorker, served as the Deputy Budget Director in New York City's Office of Management and Budget under Mayor Koch in the late 1980's and as Vice President for Finance and Operations at Fashion Institute of Technology. Prior to his work at FIT, he was director of Management and Budget for the New York City Transit Authority and a special advisor to the New York State Financial Control Board.   • Suzanne M. Murphy, M.A., Ed.M. Vice President for Development and External Affairs

    Suzanne M. Murphy became Vice President for Development and External Affairs at Teachers College in February 2008. Prior coming to Teachers College, Ms. Murphy served as Vice President of College Resources at Sarah Lawrence College, and as Vice President of External Affairs and Enrollment Services at Marymount Manhattan College. She also taught intensive summer courses in reading and writing to students in the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP); created a similar program for economically disadvantaged children who did not meet HEOP poverty requirements; and coordinated Marymount’s program in alcoholism and counseling. Ms. Murphy holds a B.A. degree from Marymount Manhattan College and both Ed.M. and M.A. degrees from Teachers College. (Website: Development and External Affairs)
  • Janice S. Robinson, Esq. Vice President for Diversity and Community Affairs

    Janice S. Robinson serves as the Vice President for Diversity and Community Affairs, and also as an Assistant Professor in Higher Education. She joined Teachers College in December 2000, and served jointly as Executive Director for Diversity and Community and assumed the additional responsibilities of the College’s first General Counsel in 2003 through February 2009.  Previously, she held a joint appointment at Rutgers University – Newark, as Special Counsel to the Law School Dean and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs; and she also served as Director for the Academic Foundations Center at the Newark College of Arts and Sciences. Previously, she was Assistant Dean, Director of the Minority Student Program and Director of Financial Aid at Rutgers Law School. She has practiced law at the Legal Aid Society – Civil Division and taught at the Dalton School. Ms. Robinson earned her J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law, her Ed. M. and M.A. from Teachers College and her B.S. from the University of Bridgeport. She earned two post-graduate certificates from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and was awarded a fellowship at the University of London’s Institute for Advanced Legal Studies.   • Nancy Streim, Associate Vice President for School and Community Partnerships and Special Advisor to the Provost

    Dr. Nancy Streim joined Teachers College in 2007 in the newly created position of Associate Vice President for School and Community Partnerships and Special Advisor to the Columbia University Provost.  In her role as the head of the Office of School and Community Partnerships (OSCP), Dr. Streim leverages faculty and student research, teaching and service to enrich learning and improve outcomes in New York City public schools, especially those in the local community.  Major initiatives include the development of the Teachers College Community School and the Teachers College Partnership Schools network.  The OSCP also provides a broad array of enrichment programs for local schools including the Reading/Math Buddies, Performing Arts Series, Harlem Schools Partnership for STEM Education, Harlem Ivy after school program and Earth Friends.

    Before coming to TC, Dr. Streim was Associate Dean for Educational Practice at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education where she and President Fuhrman developed the university-assisted school model that guides the work at TC. She holds a BA in Art History from Bryn Mawr College, an MSEd. in Higher Education Administration from SUNY-Brockport and a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.   • John P. Allegrante, Associate Vice President for International Affairs

    Dr. Allegrante is the senior Professor of Health Education and Associate Vice President for International Affairs at Teachers College, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1979 and has served as Chairman of the Department of Health and Behavior Studies and Deputy Provost of the College.  He holds joint appointments in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health of Columbia University.  As Associate Vice President for International Affairs, he is responsible for directing the College's efforts to advance and support the work of faculty internationally with global partners, including universities, ministries, and NGOs, to build local capacity and to expand professional development, technical assistance, and applied research collaborations in the fields of education, psychology, and health.  A former Fulbright Specialist and Fulbright Scholar who was named a Fulbright Ambassador in 2012, he is also the Teachers College Fulbright Program Advisor and Campus Representative.  He earned his bachelor's degree with honors from the State University of New York College at Cortland and master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois.   • Scott Fahey, M.Ed. Secretary to the College and Chief of Staff

    Scott Fahey is the Secretary to the College and Chief of Staff. He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Maine. For the first 15 years of his career in higher education, Mr. Fahey worked in the area of enrollment management at the college level and also in independent schools. He was the founder and principle of Fahey Associates, a consulting organization specializing in enrollment management for individuals and institutions. In his dual roles at Teachers College, Mr. Fahey assists the President through his management of a wide variety of special projects needing attention of the President’s Office, and as Secretary to the College he is responsible for managing the affairs of the College’s Board of Trustees.
  • William J. Baldwin, Ed.D. Vice Provost

    Dr. William J. Baldwin was named Vice Provost of Teachers College in fall 2007 after serving as the College’s Interim Dean during the 2006–07 academic year. Dr. Baldwin came to TC as a doctoral student in 1977 and became an assistant to the Provost in 1980. He has since served as Director of the Office of Institutional Studies and Planning; Assistant Provost and Director of Institutional Studies; Special Assistant to the President; Associate Dean for Student Services; and Associate Dean. Dr. Baldwin is also Associate Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Organization and Leadership. Dr. Baldwin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Villanova University, a master’s degree from the University of Toledo in English Language and Literature, and both master’s and doctoral degrees from TC, where he wrote his dissertation on the goals of community colleges.   • Lori E. Fox, General Counsel

    Lori E. Fox has served as General Counsel to Teachers College since February 2009. She previously served as Deputy General Counsel to the J. Paul Getty Trust, an international arts institution based in Los Angeles, and as Associate General Counsel at Washington University in St. Louis, where she also taught. She began her legal career as a U.S. District Court law clerk and as a litigator in private practice. Ms. Fox has broad experience in higher education law. She served as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and speaks frequently on legal topics of interest to institutions of higher education.
