Internship Opportunities for Spring/Summer 2016

The Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy, Teachers College, Columbia University currently has two internship openings for summer 2016. Internships could also be completed in spring 2016 depending on candidates’ availability. Timing for these internships is flexible, but we are ideally looking for candidates to be in our office in NYC 30-40 hours per week for 8-10 weeks. The internships are unpaid.

 Food Policy Internship

Tisch Food Center staff and students research the policies and practices that create opportunities for or barriers to good food and nutrition education. We seek to provide evidence and analyses for advocates and policy makers that can shape policy to create an environment supportive of food and nutrition education and access to good food in schools and communities. We are also active in local and national food policy coalitions that work towards stronger food systems.  For more on policy projects we are involved in, click here, and to read more about our policy-related research click here.

The Food Policy Intern will assist with research and advocacy related to local, state, and/or federal food, nutrition education, and agriculture policy. Work may also include researching government programs related to food, nutrition education, and agriculture. Experience with research, advocacy, and/or government is a plus. Strong writing and analytical skills are required.

Healthy School Environment Internship

The Tisch Food Center is working with FoodCorps, an AmeriCorps partner that connects kids to healthy food by placing service members in over 400 schools across the nation foster the creation of holistically healthy school food environments. We are evaluating the effect of this program on students’ consumption of healthy foods during lunch in 20 FoodCorps schools, using digital photography of lunch trays and a paper-and-pencil questionnaire. This data will be collected between February-June 2016.

The Healthy School Environment Intern will work closely with the FoodCorps team on data entry and analysis. This person would take responsibility for entering the questionnaire data and preliminary coding of variables. This person will also help to organize and analyze the digital photographs of school lunch trays. In addition to the school lunch data, our team will be collecting qualitative interview data from service members and school stakeholders to better understand implementation of the program. The intern will assist in conducting, transcribing, and coding themes from these interviews. Candidates should be highly motivated, able to work independently and as a team-member, detail oriented, and willing to lend their ideas to our team.
