The Office of International Services (OIS) with the assistance of the Office of the Vice-Provost, have designed a workshop to help international students learn about American academic expectations so that you can have the most successful and rewarding experience possible as you pursue your educational goals and dreams at TC.

Thur. 8/30/12 | Teachers College: Its People & History 3PM   *Special Event*

Welcome to Teachers College, the place for future educational leaders! It is our privilege to invite you to a lecture by Dr. Maxine Greene, the Philosopher, Imaginer, and Inquirer. Dr. Greene joined the faculty at TC in 1965 and is one of the few witnesses of the historical transformation of TC since the 1960s. She has also interacted with other TC icons including John Dewey. In her 90s now, she is back on campus to speak to you, our new international students. Do not miss this rare opportunity to hear from Dr. Greene. RSVP is required as space is limited.

Familiarizing yourself with the TC library system may be the best way to prepare for school! We will have an informative session with a senior librarian at TC about library resources, followed by a general library tour provided by the TC Library & Columbia Library. This workshop will be a good start to your successful graduate school life!

Mon. 09/10/12 | Start the New Semester Tech-Savvy- Computing & Technology 4PM

All the computing resources and referrals needed to survive the new learning environment are covered and more!! We will highlight the special features of the MyTC portal and introduce you to the technology services provided by the computer lab and library.

Tue. 09/11/12| Insurance Plan & Health Care Services 2PM

Health care services in the U.S. are expensive and the system could be very confusing. Insurance and Immunization Records Office will explain the TC insurance coverage and services to assist you in better understanding the US health care system before you need it!!

Wed. 09/12/12 | Nutrition & Healthy Eating Away From Home 11AM

Are you having trouble adjusting to American food? Eating too much fast food? Junk food? And not eating regular meals? Join OIS for an interactive nutrition and healthy eating workshop to learn more about healthy, delicious and affordable foods! Certified health experts will present you with simple and tasty recipes, grocery lists, and tips on reading nutrition labels, and online tools to analyze your diet, so you know and what to put on your plate!!!

Thur. 09/13/12 | Academic Expectations: Important tips for Succeeding Academically at TC 1 PM

We will discuss important expectations you will encounter throughout your academic life: collaborating with peers, communicating with professors, and planning and prioritizing.   Bring any questions and concerns you may have!

Tues. 10/9/12 | Stress Management  4PM

Feeling stressed? A health education specialist from the Columbia University Health Services will come and talk to students about effective ways to manage stress, so that it does not become a barrier to your academic and professional life.

Wed. 10/10/12 | Getting More than a Degree-How to Make the Most of Your Experience 4PM

You’re getting a degree—but how do you also get a valuable professional experience during your stay in the U.S.? Get advice that will assist you in your future professional life. In this workshop, we will explore: (1) how to set professional goals and identify professional opportunities; (2) looking beyond courses, papers, tests, and the diploma; and (3) building professional networks in the U.S. and taking them home with you.
