It’s time to meet another member of our wonderful Admission team, Alexandra Marshak! Born and raised in NYC, Alex came to TC after being inspired by her mother, an elementary teacher. Read on to get the inside scoop on the best way to spend your day in NYC and the best food in the city.
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in New York, NY.
What brought you to TC?
My mother was a New York City elementary school teacher for much of my life so I have a soft spot for teachers and the folks pursuing their calling in education.
What is your position in the Admission Office? What kinds of projects do you work on?
As the Senior Associate Director of Admission Operations, I am involved in a lot of the hands-on aspects of working with, building, and fixing our digital components, such as the online application, registrations, and application processing. I am also fortunate to collaborate with various offices around the College to ensure these things and others are running smoothly.
What is your favorite spot to hang out on campus or in the Morningside Heights area?
On beautiful sunny days, I like to sit on the famous steps of the main Columbia campus to eat my lunch and people-watch. Another fun place to hang out in the area is Hex&Co, which is a board game store where you can sit and grab a bite and play a game with family or friends that is brand new (or an old favorite!).
What is your favorite food in NYC?
My favorite food is authentic NYC bagels, from a place that makes them on-site. They are huge and chewy and delicious. Some people say it’s the water in NY that makes them so good…
If someone only had one day to spend in NYC, what would you tell them they must do?
If you had one day in NYC, I would say walk around Central Park, take the train down to the Chinatown/Little Italy area, and hop a ferry over to Brooklyn. Make sure to grab a slice of NY pizza while you’re out!
What is your favorite activity to do outside of work?
My favorite thing to do outside of work is to do any kind of arts and crafts with my two young kids. We just finished our first tile mosaic project!
What is your favorite thing about living in NYC?
My favorite thing about living in NYC is all the culture! From museums to cultural fairs and parades to specialty shops, there is always an opportunity to experience something new!
