Balancing graduate school and healthy living is not an easy task. However, living in New York City opens up a world of opportunities for healthier choices. Here are some tips that have helped me prioritize my health throughout my graduate school journey so far:

  1. Walking: Since moving to NYC, hitting my daily step count has become effortless. Walking is such a great way to stay healthy while getting where you need to go. Also, you get to see the vibrant energy and beauty of NYC. Whether you’re commuting to class or exploring a new neighborhood, every step counts!
  1. Nutrition: I like to do one big grocery shopping trip each week to minimize multiple trips to the store. I make sure to stock up on a variety of proteins, carbs, fruits, and vegetables, along with some snacks or sweets for balance. If you live near TC, you might have noticed the abundance of farmers’ markets offering fresh produce, such as the Columbia Greenmarket, which is open every Thursday and Sunday. There are also plenty of grocery stores and local markets — Trader Joe’s is one of my favorites. If you’re in a pinch, TC’s Grace Dodge Dining Hall has a made-to-order salad bar, and there are numerous shops nearby offering fresh options like sandwiches, soups, and salads.
  1. Exercise: NYC offers a ton of fitness opportunities to suit every preference. With numerous walking trails, gyms, workout classes, and cycling centers, there’s something for everyone. All TC students have access to Dodge Fitness Center, just a block away from campus. Whether you prefer weightlifting, cardio, or squash, you can find something you enjoy. Dodge also offers various fitness classes and training options!
  1. Preparing and Planning: As a graduate student juggling academics, a social life, work, family, and a healthy lifestyle, planning is essential for success. Meal prepping and scheduling workouts not only save time but also helps with decision fatigue. I dedicate Sundays to shopping for healthy meals and snacks, which makes it easy to pack nutritious lunches for the week ahead. I also use this time to plan out my exercise schedule. By reviewing my upcoming week, I can identify when I have classes or assignments due and find ways to incorporate exercise and wellness into my routine.
  1. Hobbies and Rest: Health isn’t just about the physical — self-care is equally important. Do activities that bring you joy, whether it’s a walk in Central Park, calling a friend, reading, watching a movie, or playing a sport. Self-care will look different for everyone, but make sure it’s incorporated into your routine!
  1. Finding Balance: Ultimately, achieving balance is key to healthy living. We’re all managing our coursework, and many of us juggle jobs and other responsibilities. Therefore, a healthy lifestyle will look a little different for all of us. Remember to cut yourself some slack from time to time!

Thank you all for reading! Wishing everyone a great and healthy year ahead!
